Our Mission
Malta House of Care – Waterbury provides free, high-quality, coordinated primary healthcare services to uninsured adults in the Greater Waterbury community.
We provide a medical home for our patients, reduce unnecessary emergency room use, and prevent advanced disease caused by delayed treatment.
Our History
Malta House of Care – Waterbury began serving patients in August 2010.
For more than a decade, the clinic operated through a mobile model, delivering care directly into underserved neighborhoods. During that time, thousands of uninsured adults received consistent primary care — many for the first time.
On March 1, 2022, we entered a new chapter.
The former St. Francis Xavier Convent was transformed into a modern clinic space with exam rooms, triage, office and conference space, and a welcoming waiting area.
This shift from mobile unit to permanent clinic marked a critical moment in our history — allowing for growth, expanded services, and greater continuity of care.
Today, we have provided more than 13,000 patient visits — entirely free of charge.
Who We Serve
Our patients are uninsured adults with limited resources and are ineligible for health insurance. We serve patients of all faiths and backgrounds. No one is turned away due to inability to pay.
A Volunteer-Driven Model
Malta House of Care – Waterbury is unique among Connecticut free clinics.
All clinical services are provided exclusively by volunteer physicians, nurses, and medical professionals. We have no paid clinical staff.
This volunteer-driven model allows us to keep overhead low and direct funding toward patient care.
We are supported by community health workers who assist with:
- Insurance eligibility screening
- Financial assistance applications
- Care coordination
- Referrals for social services
Every new patient is assessed for social determinants of health, including food insecurity, housing instability, and transportation needs.

With a permanent clinic home and a strong volunteer base, we are positioned to expand access to care and meet the increasing needs of uninsured adults in Greater Waterbury.
